Hosted by St Mary’s Church, Luddenden Conservation Society & Luddenden History Club.
As Easter approaches, a group of people dressed in strange, but colourful, costumes will be seen around Calderdale villages. They will be carrying on the ancient tradition of pace egging.
The word 'pace' may be derived from the Latin 'pasche' meaning passion. Hence, the reason why the play is performed at Easter time. There have been suggestions that 'pace' may be a dialect form of the word 'peace'. The play is sometimes known as the 'Peace Egg Play'.
You may wonder what the play is all about, with intriguing character names, like:
St George;
The Slasher;
Doctor;
Fool;
The Black Moroccan Prince;
Hector;
and last, but not least Toss Pot!
Huge thanks to The Midgley Pace Egg Play team!
From home groups and choir practices, to our Spring Flower Fun with the children, and a truly special Palm Sunday - it’s been a week to be thankful for.
A heartfelt thank you to Rachel Smith-Moorhouse for so generously sharing her time and creativity with our families on Saturday
A big thank you to Fr Ryan Green from Mirfield for taking the time to be with us and being yet another wonderful guest priest.
We’re also so grateful to Chris and Katie for leading our procession with Paddy the Pony, and Dom for providing music for our procession with the Trumpet.
Don't panic - just small battery operated piglets racing down our newly constructed race track! Huge thanks to Grovesy and Natalie for designing, constructing and painting the new track.
What a brilliant Pancake Day! Thank you to the roughly 70 people who came along to St Mary’s yesterday and helped make it a success. A special thank you to Pam, Linda, Claudia and Alan for volunteering and putting in a flippin’ awesome shift. And of course Harry for managing it all!
From the Mayor: "Delicious Burns Night supper: Cullen skink, Scotch broth, haggis, neeps and tatties, and Cranachan trifle on the menu. The haggis was piped in and splendidly toasted by our mayor, Nigel, and a fun evening was enjoyed by all with a raffle and quiz raising around £150 for the Luddenden Mayor’s fund to support local causes.
Thank you to Booth Cricket Club for the use of the venue which was very congenial."
The Annual Luddenden Village Christmas Wreath Competition
You have a chance to win a Christmas Hamper sponsored by the Luddenden Conservation Society.
All you have to do is create a Christmas Wreath from 60% foraged, natural and recycled materials.
Rebecca Hainsworth the winner of last years competition will be judging the wreaths and the winner will be announced a few days before Christmas Day.
To help judging please post a photo on the site when you put your wreath outside
Unfortunately the competition is confined to the Conservation foot print of the village …this still took myself and Mary Smith ( 2023 winner)judge two and a half hours to walk the area last year .
Have fun and let’s brighten up the village once again this year.
From the Mayor: We had a really good turnout for yesterday’s Luddenden Mayor’s Christmas Fayre in spite of the dreadful weather. Father Christmas was in attendance with his spritely elves and a wide array of stalls selling gifts and delicious food added colour and interest to the event. More than £600 was raised for local causes, a magnificent total. Thank you to Midgley School choir who sang beautifully, St Mary's in Luddenden for lending us the wonderful venue, Lord Nelson Inn Luddenden Village for kindly donating the mulled wine, all the stallholders for donating raffle prizes, the team of organisers and helpers and all of you who braved the weather and spent so generously. Finally, a big thank you to the main man, Father Christmas, for gracing us with his presence.

"Such a fun afternoon yesterday at the Luddenden Mayor’s Senior Social and Singalong. We were royally entertained by Al G, enjoyed delicious pie and peas, kindly provided by The Secret Cafe and finished with a round of Bingo. This was a free event for local seniors but a raffle raised £166 for the Mayor’s chosen special charity this year, Alzheimer’s Research. Thank you to Booth Cricket Club for providing the venue."
A wonderful time was reported! Thanks to Jackie Smith for organising the event.
A wonderful day in the village! Nigel Hodgson is duly elected the new village mayor!
Many stalls, lots of games and a lot of cake! Weather was a bit variable, but was sunny during the important times. Duck race was a little wetter, not helped by your editor falling into the brook during the commentary.
Great start of Nigel's term, and we raised significant funds for Nigel's chosen charity - Alzheimer’s Research UK.
